A recent mailing for the National Constitution Center noted somewhat cynically that more teenagers can name the members of the Three Stooges than can name the three branches of government.
What this tells us, I think, is that young people find the government and politics increasingly irrelevant, incompetent, evil, or some combination of these ? and that popular culture plays a more important role in their lives.
I know readers of this blog can name the three branches of government. But is pop culture also important to you?
Answer the questions below and judge for yourself:
1. What is Herman Munster?s home address?
2. What is the serial number on the original U.S.S. Enterprise?
3. Name the three teenage boys who have teamed with Batman as Robin?
And of course, searching the Internet to get the answers is cheating.

Pop culture isn’t important to me, having said that, I can tell you a lot about Seinfeld and The Simpsons 🙂

There are a lot more books around like your The Ultimate Unauthorized Stephen King Trivia Challenge than books that explain how the government works or should work. The trivia books are much more interesting. Watching the Munster’s is also more interesting than watching the Congress in action. Our sound bite mentality makes serious listening/watching much more difficult for many. Incidentally, I don’t know nor care about any of the answers. 🙂

My guess is that most teenages CANNOT name the three stooges and have no clue who they were as they are very “old school” for teens.

Hmmm…this really hits home. I don’t know Herman Munster’s address or the answer to the Batman and Robin question, but I do know that NCC-1701 was the designation of the original Starship Enterprise. That’s kind of scary.
Looking back on life, I’m sort of ashamed of the time I wasted killing brain cells in front of the boob tube. As I’ve gotten older, I’m finding myself trying to spend less time watching TV and more either reading or working on that novel I hope to publish someday. Sometimes I succeed and sometimes I don’t, but I know I’m wasting less time than before.
On the issue of politics, I agree with you wholeheartedly. It’s a sad state of affairs when we know more about the latest blockbuster motion picture than we do about our own foreign policy. That said, I’m not as politically-savvy as I used to be. That may be good or bad.
